COMM 486Y - Cybersecurity

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the principles that frame and define cybersecurity, and the role of cybersecurity practitioners, practices and technology in the protection of enterprise assets from external and insider threats.

Cybersecurity has been recognized as one of the preeminent challenges of our time.  As many organizations increasingly transform to adopt digital business models with the use of emerging technologies, the need for these organizations to develop comprehensive cybersecurity programs has become apparent.  Business and IT professionals need to understand the principles of cybersecurity in order to effectively communicate about cyber risk with senior leadership and to support Business-IT strategic alignment.

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

• Understand key concepts, terminology and tools used in the cybersecurity field
• Describe the cybersecurity implications of new and emerging technologies
• Identify the key components of cybersecurity architecture
• Describe cyber risk management processes and practices
• Explain the relationship between threats, vulnerabilities and risks
• Describe different threat agents, their motivations and common attack vectors

Prerequisite: COMM 205
