Orientation Leader and Volunteer hiring 2021

Hey Sauder!

We are now hiring for Imagine Day and The Spark 2021!

What will orientations look like this year?

We are planning to deliver a fun and safe orientation experience with a combination of in-person and virtual activities. In addition to our regular orientation events for new BCom students starting in September 2021, some orientation events this year will also be for students who began their BCom degree in September 2020. All orientation events will follow the most up to date provincial health guidelines for post-secondary institutions.

Jump Start (August 29 – September 3, 2021)

  • For all newly admitted first year students.
  • Students will have the option to participate in a fully virtual experience or a hybrid experience with in-person and virtual components to help them make friends and feel prepared to start their academic journey at UBC.

Campus Welcome (Monday, September 6, 2021)

  • New event for 2021.
  • For all students who began their BCom degree in September 2020 (admitted to Year 1, 2 or 3 in 2020 who will be taking in-person classes for the first time at UBC Sauder this year).
  • Participants will be put in small groups with students from other faculties across campus so they can meet other UBC students and get to know the campus together.

Imagine UBC (Tuesday, September 7, 2021)

  • For all newly admitted first year and transfer undergraduate students.
  • A combination of in-person and virtual activities through which students will meet a faculty member and other new UBC Sauder students, be officially welcomed by Dean Bob, participate in a virtual pep rally and learn about involvement opportunities across campus.

The Spark (Saturday, September 11)

  • For all students entering Year 2, 3 or 4 who will be taking in-person classes for the first time at UBC Sauder this year. This includes students admitted to Year 1 in 2020, transfer students admitted in 2020 and transfer students admitted in 2021.
  • We are planning for an in-person experience in which students will be in groups with others in their year level and a common course, participating in fun games and small group activities.

The Spark (Sunday, September 12)

  • For all first year students newly admitted to UBC Sauder.
  • We are planning for an in-person experience in which students will be in groups with their cohort, participating in fun games and group activities.

We're looking for individuals who:

  • embody the Sauder Spirit
  • are passionate about making sure every new student feels welcome in the UBC Sauder community
  • exemplify Sauder’s core values of rigour, respect, and responsibility
  • know how to have responsible fun with a good sense of judgement
  • love being a Sauder student!

We're hiring for three key positions. The deadline to apply is Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 11:59pm PT.

Position descriptions

Orientation Leader

We're looking for leaders with diverse involvement experiences, responsibility, and above all, Sauder Spirit! Whether you're a dancing, cheering machine or love having meaningful conversations, we want you to be a part of the team! Orientation Leaders commit to lead a group of first year, second year or transfer students through Imagine UBC and The Spark with the core mission of ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging as a part of both the Sauder and UBC communities.

In addition to the attributes listed above, you must be committed to supporting your group throughout all the programs (Imagine UBC and The Spark).

What is the time commitment of an Orientation Leader?
I began my BCom degree in September 2020 and will be taking in-person classes at Sauder for the first time this year. Can I still be an Orientation Leader?
Do I have to commit to both programs (Imagine UBC and The Spark)?
What if I'm also a Jump Start Leader?
Do I need to make a video as part of my application?
Do I need to be an extrovert to be an Orientation Leader?
How are leader hiring decisions made?

Spirit Leader

Are you a senior student, or graduating this year, have been very involved in orientations and the UBC Sauder community, and want to ensure the Sauder spirit stays alight in the hallways of Henry Angus? Then consider applying to be a Spirit Leader for The Spark. By leading cheers in crazy costumes, playing spontaneous “minute-to-win-it” style games, and starting dance-offs, this group of loud, creative, outgoing, and energetic people show new students what Sauder Spirit is all about.

Spark Volunteer

The Spark weekend wouldn’t happen without an awesome team of volunteers and this year we need to hire over 150! Volunteers are UBC Sauder students entering Year 2 or higher who want to get more involved in the Sauder community, meet other Sauder students and are excited to create the best possible welcome event. Volunteers can choose to lead a games station, help with catering distribution or assist with many other event tasks. They get a behind-the-scenes experience, have a ton of fun, and are right in the middle of all the action.
