Minor in Arts or Science

A minor is a good way to broaden your studies, complement your option, have another subject area recognized on your official transcript, and expand your employment opportunities.

Minor in Arts

If you plan to complete a Minor in Arts, you must meet with an Arts Departmental Advisor who can assist you in completing a minor study plan.

Once you have your minor study plan approved by the Arts Departmental Advisor, submit the approved study plan to the UBC Sauder Undergraduate Office.

The minor designation will be added to your academic record at the time of graduation if you have successfully completed all requirements.

Visit the UBC Calendar to check the academic requirements of a minor in a particular subject area.

Minor in Law and Society

If you're planning to complete a Minor in Law and Society (LASO), you must complete and submit your minor study plan or the Minor Program in Law and Society advising form, available from the LASO program advisor, to the UBC Sauder Undergraduate Office before you start the required introductory course, LASO 204.

Once the Law and Society minor designation has been added to your record, you will be able to register in the course and receive all communications and updates about the program.

Minor in Science

If you plan to complete a Minor in Science, you must meet with a Science Departmental Advisor who can assist you in completing a minor study plan.

Once you have your minor study plan approved by the Science Departmental Advisor, submit the approved study plan to the UBC Sauder Undergraduate Office.

The minor designation will be added to your academic record at the time of graduation if you have successfully completed all requirements.

Please be aware that space in science courses is limited. Admission to a Science minor does not guarantee access to courses agreed upon for that minor.

Minor in Data Science

If you plan to complete a Minor in Data Science, you’ll need to apply through the Data Science Minor (DSM) website when applications open in April. The site outlines all key details, including admission criteria and required courses—make sure to review these carefully.

BCom students can use the Minor Study Plan form for planning and meet with a Data Science Minor Advisor for guidance. However, DSM advisors will not sign the form, as a signed plan is not required for the application. Students only need to submit the online application, as outlined on the DSM website. Before contacting the DSM team, check the FAQ section for helpful information.

If you're admitted, the DSM admissions team will notify the UGO, and the minor will be added to your Program of Study record in Workday Student (Please note that process is different from the other Arts and Science minors).

The minor designation will be added to your academic record at the time of graduation if you have successfully completed all requirements.
