COMM 386A - Business Ethics Leadership

This course will provide practical skills for students to help improve the moral culture of organizations they are affiliated with. This will allow them to exercise leadership in business ethics no matter where they stand in an organization.

One skill is to be able to identify the values of their organization, and how it should treat its various stakeholders. This skill will be developed from readings in the business ethics literature, and in studying cases from ongoing business news stories. There will also be guest speakers from both the academic and business communities.

The second skill is to develop an understanding of best practices in business ethics leadership and management. This skill will be developed through the readings, the case studies, and the experiences shared by the visitors.

The third skill is to be able to develop and execute a plan for business ethics leadership. To develop this skill the student will identify an opportunity for business ethics leadership in an organization she is affiliated with, and will plan and execute the project.

Learning objectives

The course has been developed to achieve three objectives:

  1. identify an organization's values and how it should treat its stakeholders.
  2. understand best practices in business ethics leadership.
  3. develop and execute a plan in business ethics leadership.

In summary, the course is intended to be practical and is focused on developing students' abilities as business ethics leaders.
