COMM 486S - Decoding Social Media

Co-taught by Alfred Hermida from the School of Journalism and Paul Cubbon from the Sauder School of Business, this course “will simulate an interdisciplinary think tank environment where students identify research questions and examine the impact of social media on society, business and culture” (UBC Graduate School of Journalism, News and Events).

From a Sauder student perspective this is a follow-on course from COMM 464, and students need to take them in sequence (COMM 464 is the prerequisite). Decoding Social Media focuses exclusively on social media (whereas it is a sub-set of COMM 464 which covers the broader digital marketing landscape). Furthermore, Decoding Social Media will aim to provide students with practice and preliminary competence in a number of social media skills and tools, such as Hootsuite Pro, and advanced writing and image design and management.

Note: COMM 486S will not be offered in 2023W.
