APSC 383 - Prototyping (formerly COMM 386P)

APSC 383 will expose you to the fundamental process and modern tools available for prototyping to allow access to key tools for practical advancement of initiatives in innovation, product development, market identification, and problem-solving.

This course will operate through the delivery of lectures by a small group of instructors from a range of engineering disciplines. It may also include guest presentations, and will involve hands-on group and individual activities, individual assignment-based assessments for each module, and a larger final group project.

The course is a senior-level Commerce elective that can count toward Entrepreneurship option requirements.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • deconstruct a new product or service ideas into component parts that can each be separately prototyped and tested.
  • demonstrate basic abilities in a range of software tools to create 2D and 3D, static and moving prototype models.
  • recognize and make use of common electronics components used in prototyping applications.
  • create prototypes at different stages of project development and complexity that can be customer tested.
  • create appropriate data gathering and evaluation tools for gathering information about prototype performance.
  • present the prototypes to a range of stakeholders.

Note: Formerly numbered COMM 386P. If you've completed the course as COMM 386P, you are not permitted to take it again as APSC 383 (you cannot receive credit for the same course twice).
